This course is available for all students who have sucessfully completed Biology and Chemistry.
If you are interested in the newest growing field in science, than this is your course.
This class is designed to provide basic laboratory skills and an understanding of the Biotechnology industry.

 What is Biotechnology? {just click a term to learn more}
Biotechnology is best explained by how it is being used in industry: recombinant DNA technology to make insulin, golden rice, transgenic organisms , GM ( genetically modified) foods , forensic investigations ( DNA fingerprinting ), bioremediation ( process of breaking down environmental pollutants), and gene therapy to treat genetic diseases . Biotechnology is the field of science that uses products of living organisms ( DNA sequences or protein) primarily to make new products

 Why should I take it?
This course is designed to provide you with a broad overview of the science of biotechnology as well as develop the technical skills needed by local industry. We will be focusing heavily on laboratory experiments with an emphasis on techniques currently being used by industry.

 What is ROP?
ROP stands for: Regional Occupational Program. This program provides students with an opportunity to get some basic skills/experience in a specific industry related area.

 What is a typical day like?
This class is designed to give you many opportunities to get basic lab skills and work experiences in the Biotechnology fields. So you will learn good, general laboratory practices with special attention lab safety. In addition, you will learn and practice the laboratory techniques unique to the Biotechnology field. Almost every day is a lab day in Biotech!

Test & Quizzes make up 15% of your grade. See the next question for more details.

 How will I be graded?

? Attendance must again be stressed as a major component of your grade. If you are not here to participate in labs you cannot successfully complete this course. Attendance is critical! Participation in and completion of the experiments is vital.

?You will be expected to keep an accurate legal scientific notebook that will account for a large percentage of your grade.

?The majority of assessments for this course will be performance based and evaluated from the perspective of employer/employee. There will also be written tests and quizzes to evaluate accumulation of knowledge throughout the course.
