Band Camp Band camp kicks off each new school year. It lasts for one or two weeks prior to the beginning of the school year. It is an intense time for learning marching techniques, beginning to learn the show music, and creating the family-bonds within our band. It is important for all band students to take part in this, so plan your vacations around it. It takes place at Fremont HS, typically from 1:00 pm until 9:00 p.m. with a couple of 9:00 to 9:00 days. Often, there is a pizza party/fundraiser at a local restaurant the night before camp starts. The last day concludes with a mandatory meeting for parents/guardians and a BBQ / potluck for the entire band family (that means parents and siblings too) where the band will perform the music they have learned so far.

District Exhibition This non-competitive event is our first chance to perform our field show for an audience. It is performed on the Fremont HS football field. Each of the five district High Schools (Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista) plus other area High Schools may invited to participate. The schools that attend perform their show twice, once for the paying spectators in the front bleachers and again for the other students in the back bleachers. This may be the only chance our students get to watch the shows performed by the other schools in our district. The proceeds from tickets sold to this event are split between the participating Fremont Union High School District schools so everyone (including volunteers) is encouraged to purchase a (~$5) ticket. A different school runs the concession stand each year.

Field Show Competitions Field shows take place on football fields at various locations. Spectators watch from the bleachers. Bands compete against other bands of comparable size. During competitions, all bands must comply with strict rules. There is a time limit to take the field and signal ready for performance. The performance must be a certain number of minutes long, but cannot exceed a maximum time period. Each competition has its own unique judging categories and bands are graded on a variety of aspects of their performance. Our students work many, many hours to perfect their show as they continue to improve their scores and rankings when judged against other bands. In a typical season, we take part in four to five of these Saturday competitions. Consult the calendar on the website. Between the performance and the awards ceremony, the boosters prepare dinner while the students pack up uniforms and equipment. These dinners are band-family events. Parents and siblings are encouraged to eat with the students.

Parades In parades, our band is judged based on their performance during the parade route. Parades also offer a variety of judging categories, including straightness of rows and music quality. They sometimes include a uniform inspection, so it is important that every student have every detail of their uniform in order. Student behavior prior to “step-off” may also be counted in the score.

Cupertino Tournament of Bands (TOB) The first competition of each year is the Tournament of Bands, held at Cupertino High School. It includes both a parade and a field show competition. The parade is in the morning and starts and ends at Cupertino High School at Finch Ave with part of the parade route on Stevens Creek Blvd. We set up camp at Cupertino High School where we may serve both lunch and dinner. In the afternoon, an optional drill down takes place. Students who wish to participate take the field. One of the judges shouts out “marching commands”. The marchers drop out when they make a mistake until there is only one participant left. The field show takes place in the evening.

Homecoming Parade This non-competitive event takes place right after school on the day of the Homecoming Football game. The marchers are full of school spirit as they accompany the class floats and homecoming court in this parade. The route usually begins at the back parking lot and progresses clockwise around the block (Fremont Ave, Hollenbeck, Remington, Sunnyvale- Saratoga) to the front parking lot. Families are encouraged to come and cheer for our band.

Mini Band Camp Each June we host a one-day, Saturday event for incoming 8th grade band members. All band students are encouraged to participate. At the end of the day a welcome BBQ is held for all band families.

Football Games The pep band, consisting of marching band and concert band students, plays at home varsity football games. There are usually about five home games. Games are usually on Friday evening or afternoon but sometimes are on other days. Check the dates and times on your band calendar. The band supports the football team and cheer squad by cheering and playing pep music. A pregame concert is usually performed and the band provides half-time entertainment at some games. Dress may be polos or full uniform. Black turtlenecks or sweaters may be worn under polos for warmth. Band students have a snack break during the third quarter of the game.
